Today we’re back in the Granite Belt with Tobin Wines and their new 2018 Elliot Reserve Merlot. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing this one progress from barrel to bottle over the last 18 months, and a beautiful end result.
Pronounced blackberry, black cherries, fruit cake, vanilla and black pepper and earthiness on the nose. Full bodied and rich tannins on the palate, with more black fruits and oak spice on the body and very long finish.
Low cropping and aggressive thinning of the vines means a very low yield, but rich and concentrated fruit. A proper grown-up Merlot and one that would reward patience in the cellar.
